Utopia's 2007 Texan of the Year" Award Goes to Harley Belew & Randy & Lisa at the Save Inn Restaurant!

Maria

Maria, rescued by Willie Nelson's daughter Paula, is approximately ten months old. She is sweet and ready to be loved.

A letter from Willie Nelson's daughter, Paula

Maria is probably just about a year old. Unfortunately, she has spent
her entire life up until now, chained to a tree without hardly any food
or water.  My sister discovered Maria while making her nightly rounds in the neighborhood feeding stray cats.  Chained to a tree, Maria was without food or water, scared, and terribly malnourished, but managed to wag her tail as fast as she could at the thought of a gentle hand who would love her.

My sister continued to stop by Maria's house nightly to give her food,
water, and love.  After asking a couple of people in the neighborhood
about the puppy and her owners, she discovered what horrible, abusive,
and violent people they were.  These creeps had previously killed two
of the neighborhood dogs by using a baseball bat on one, and then
intentionally running over a blind elderly dog.

That was it!  We had heard enough!  We planned our rescue carefully.
In the wee hours of the night, along with my accomplices, Cathy Guthrie
(Arlo's daughter) and my sister, Cathy--we took Maria!

Maria was not her name, we never knew her real name, but as we drove
away hoping we were doing the right thing, over the radio we heard our
dad singing, "Maria, Shut Up and Kiss Me."  We took it as a sign, that
yes, we were doing the right thing and her name should be Maria!

The next day, we drove Maria to my vet in Austin, and found out not
only was she just a puppy herself, but also pregnant.  She was so
malnourished that it would of killed her had she given birth to the
puppies, so on the veterinarian's advice--the puppies were aborted and
Maria was on the road to recovery.

One month later, I took Maria to the Utopia Animal Rescue Ranch.  She
is now doing great!  I have never seen a dog more appreciative just to
get a bowl of food.  She wags her tail the entire time while she is
eating.  She is such a good dog.  She just needs love!
