BAR, BAR, BAR--- BARBIE STREISAND!
by Nancy Parker-Simons

On a weekly visit to the dump in Sabinal, Texas, I met the one and only Barbara Streisand!  She was hidden under a huge trash dumpster and scared.  I was able to coax her out within a minute's time.  Leaving out the gory details--she had been shot in the front leg, her jaw was broken in three places, she was starved and near death's door.  After carefully getting her inside the truck cab, she and I headed for the nearest vet which was twenty some odd miles away.  It was the fastest that I have ever driven.  On the way to the clinic I told her that she was a very special dog and named her.

Dr. Riff, of the Hondo Animal Clinic, then saved her life!  Three days following her surgery, we went to pick her up.  Dr. Riff said before bringing her out to us, "That dog sure wanted to live.  After amputating her leg from the shoulder and fixing part of her jaw she almost died on the operating table."

Show Time!  Barbie came hopping out to us in the waiting room on three legs and her tail was wagging!  My friend, Maribeth Couch, remarked, "Look!  She's smiling at us!"

A few weeks later, we drove Barbara up to Austin to have her jaw checked out by an orthopedic surgeon.  Diagnosis: "She'll heal fine and no more operations needed!"  We howled the whole way back to the rescue ranch.

Nick Marsh, a good friend of ours and a volunteer for our ranch, adopted Barbie for his mother up in Fort Worth, where she now lives the life of luxury!  But, we still get to see her when she needs babysitting. She comes to Utopia and stays with Nick!

We love you, Barbie!
